The Punjab government has announced an ambitious plan to enhance security in its prisons by installing a total of 9,200 high-tech cameras across 43 jails as part of the Safe Prisons Programme. This initiative aims to modernize prison security measures and improve monitoring capabilities to ensure a safer environment for both inmates and staff.
On Monday, Punjab Home Secretary Noorul Amin Mengal convened a meeting to assess the progress of the camera installation project in various prisons throughout Punjab. During the meeting, he emphasized the need for a comprehensive approach to security, directing the Safe City Authority to complete a detailed survey for the camera installation within a week.
In addition to surveillance cameras, Mengal insisted that each jail be equipped with body cameras, a public address system, access control systems, and panic buttons. These features are designed to enhance communication and ensure quick responses to emergencies within the prison environment.
The meeting revealed that the new installation would consist of modern 8-megapixel cameras, which are expected to significantly improve the quality of surveillance footage. These state-of-the-art cameras will include advanced features such as facial and vehicle recognition capabilities, along with a sophisticated visitor management system to monitor all individuals entering the prison facilities.
Moreover, the integration of artificial intelligence will allow these cameras to not only monitor the attendance and movement of inmates and staff but also automatically generate alerts in response to any unlawful activities detected within the jails. This proactive approach aims to prevent incidents before they escalate, enhancing the overall security framework of the facilities.
In the initial phase of this project, the focus will be on completing the installation in high-profile and central jails, where security needs are paramount. The Safe Cities Authority has been tasked with providing the necessary technical assistance to ensure the successful implementation of this camera installation initiative.
This strategic move by the Punjab government highlights its commitment to modernizing prison infrastructure and enhancing safety standards. By adopting advanced technology in surveillance, the government aims to create a more secure environment for inmates, reduce the likelihood of incidents, and improve the overall management of prisons across the province. The success of this project could serve as a model for similar initiatives in other regions, showcasing the importance of leveraging technology in the realm of correctional facility management.
