A Nigerian Air Force aircraft crashed in the southwestern state of Ondo, killing all 32 people on board.
President Bola Tinubu expressed deep sorrow over the tragic incident and offered condolences to the families of those who lost their lives.
According to the Nigerian Air Force, the aircraft was on a routine mission from Benin City in southern Nigeria to Lagos when it crashed in the Igbo-Koda area of Ondo State at around 9 a.m. local time.
The Presidency said the aircraft was carrying 25 passengers and seven crew members. No one survived the crash. Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo said the aircraft crashed near a naval base.
Emergency response teams reached the crash site shortly after the incident and began rescue and recovery operations.
The cause of the crash has not yet been determined. President Tinubu has directed the Nigerian Air Force to launch an immediate and comprehensive investigation to establish the cause of the accident and take measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
A local resident, Dayo Akintoye, said he heard a loud noise at the time of the crash, which he initially mistook for thunder. He said a local fisherman later alerted the nearby naval base and residents about the aircraft crash.
Igbo-Koda is located in the Ilaje district of Ondo State, an area known for oil production in Nigeria.
