On July 24, 2026, Pakistan opened a huge new facility in Islamabad. It is called Sky47 Karakoram-01. Officials called it the country's largest, and first, artificial intelligence ready data center. The Prime Minister called it "awe-inspiring."

But what does this actually mean for ordinary people in Pakistan? And is the "first" claim even true? Let's break it down.

What Is a Data Center?

Think of a data center as a giant building full of powerful computers. These computers store information and do heavy computing work. Every time you use an app, save a file online, or use AI tools like ChatGPT, that data has to live somewhere. Usually, it lives in data centers outside Pakistan, in places like the US, Europe, Singapore, or the UAE.

Sky47 Karakoram-01 changes that. It is a giant data center built right here in Pakistan, inside Capital Smart City, near New Islamabad International Airport.

What Makes This One Special?

This is what experts call a "sovereign cloud." That means the data stored here stays inside Pakistan, under Pakistani control, instead of sitting on servers owned by foreign companies abroad.

The facility currently runs at 8.5 megawatts of power, with room to grow to more than 50 megawatts over time. It was built to strict international standards, with backup systems, security cameras, and controlled access, so government and business data stays safe.

In simple words: important Pakistani data, like government records, bank information, and health records, can now stay inside the country instead of traveling abroad.

Who Actually Built It?

This is where it gets interesting. Despite being called an "AI cloud," Sky47 did not come from a telecom or tech company. It comes from an oil and gas company.

Sky47 Limited is majority owned by Mari Energies Limited, a large energy company. Mari Energies itself counts the Fauji Foundation, the state-owned Oil and Gas Development Company, and the Government of Pakistan among its major shareholders. The facility was built together with China's ZTE, a telecom equipment company.

So the money and ownership behind Sky47 sit mostly with state and military linked institutions, not a private tech startup.

Is It Really Pakistan's "First" AI Data Center?

The government has called Karakoram-01 the country's "first ever" purpose built AI data center. However, that claim depends on how "first" is defined.

Several other projects have made similar claims before Sky47:

• Telenor Pakistan, working with a company called Data Vault, launched what it called Pakistan's first locally hosted AI data center back in November 2025, roughly eight months before Sky47.

• Khazana Cloud, working with the Air Force run NASTP, has been building what it calls Pakistan's first hyperscale data center, using Chinese Huawei hardware, across sites in Rawalpindi, Lahore, Karachi, and Kamra.

• NED University in Karachi opened a data center in February 2025 that university officials called the country's first Tier 3 certified facility.

So the word "first" has really been used by several different organizations over the past few years, depending on whether they are referring to an AI-ready cloud, a hyperscale facility, or a Tier 3 certified data center. What does seem true is that Sky47's 8.5 megawatts makes it the largest facility currently operating in Pakistan. Even so, that number is still small next to global AI data centers, which often run into the hundreds of megawatts.

What About Islamabad's Land and Water?

This is the part that gets less attention, but it matters a lot.

The facility is located within Capital Smart City on Chakri Road, a rapidly developing area near New Islamabad International Airport. The area has already faced concerns about heavy construction, tree loss, and disruption to natural water drainage. Once land is used for a high security data center, it cannot easily go back to farming or open land again.

Water is the bigger concern. Data centers need constant cooling to stop their computers from overheating, and many large facilities use substantial amounts of water for cooling. Sky47 has not publicly disclosed its cooling technology or expected water consumption. Pakistan is already a water scarce country. The amount of water available per person has dropped sharply over the decades, and experts say Pakistan is now well below the internationally recognized line for water scarcity. As more large data centers are built, questions will naturally arise about where their cooling water will come from and whether it could compete with water needed for homes and farms nearby.

There is also the electricity question. Pakistan's power sector is already under financial strain, with large unpaid debts across the system. A facility that plans to grow from 8.5 megawatts to over 50 megawatts will require a steady, reliable supply of electricity, raising broader questions about long-term energy planning as the country's digital infrastructure expands.

None of this means the project should not have happened. Even critics agree that Pakistan needs its own local data infrastructure instead of depending on foreign servers. The real question is about timing, and whether enough thought has gone into where the power, water, and money for these facilities will keep coming from once the opening ceremony is over.

What Comes Next

A second, smaller facility is already being built at Port Qasim in Karachi, expected to finish by September 2026. A third site is planned for Lahore, though no exact size or date has been announced yet.

At the same time, competing projects are also moving forward, including the Air Force linked Khazana Cloud project. Over the next year or two, it should become clear which of these platforms Pakistani banks, government departments, and businesses actually choose to use, since building the buildings is only the first step. Getting real customers to move their systems in is the part that will decide whether this investment pays off.
