Understanding Currency Rates

Two types of exchange rates are commonly reported in Pakistan: the open market rate and the SBP rate.

The open market rate is what exchange companies and banks actually use for transactions. The SBP rate is the State Bank of Pakistan's official reference rate. Small differences between the two are normal — but a large or sustained gap can indicate market volatility or liquidity pressure.

BaKhabar Pakistan shows both rates side by side so you can compare them yourself and make better-informed decisions. We also cross-check against SBP — when the market rate is within 1% of the SBP rate, we display a "✓ Verified" badge on that currency pair.

For diaspora users sending money home, the rate that matters most is the one your remittance provider actually gives you — which is typically close to the open market rate but includes a spread or fee. That's why knowing both the market rate and the SBP benchmark helps you judge whether a provider's offered rate is fair.

Sending Money from the UAE to Pakistan — Tips

Compare the rupees received, not just the fee. Many providers advertise "no fee" but build their margin into the exchange rate. Multiply your amount by the market rate on this page, then compare it with the PKR amount your provider quotes. The gap is your real cost.

Compare on the day you send. PKR rates move, so last week's quote may not hold today.

Pick the delivery method that suits the recipient. Mobile wallets (JazzCash, Easypaisa) and cash pickup usually arrive within minutes, while bank deposits can take one to two business days.

Use a licensed provider. Choose a service licensed by the Central Bank of the UAE, and avoid informal channels.

Keep your details ready. Emirates ID or passport, the recipient's full name exactly as on their account, their IBAN or account number, and the purpose of the transfer.

Bank transfer is usually cheaper than card. Funding a transfer by bank transfer generally costs less than paying by card.

Popular online services (listed alphabetically, not ranked):

  • Remitly — mobile wallet and bank delivery, real-time tracking
  • Taptap Send — Easypaisa, JazzCash, banks and cash pickup

Rates and fees change, so confirm the final amount with your provider before sending.

How We Source & Verify Rates

Market rates are sourced from international exchange rate APIs and updated four times daily (10AM, 1PM, 4PM, 7PM PKT). The SBP rate is scraped from the State Bank of Pakistan's website — if SBP is unavailable, we fall back to forex.pk's interbank mid-rate.

AED and SAR SBP-derived rates are calculated from their fixed USD pegs (AED: 3.6725 since 1997, SAR: 3.75 since 1986), which makes them highly accurate. GBP and EUR SBP-derived rates use market cross-rate approximations and may have slightly wider variance.

All five currency pairs go through the same verification pipeline as our gold rates — the same infrastructure that earned the "✓ Verified" badge trusted by users across our gold, silver, and currency pages.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the current AED to PKR rate?

BaKhabar Pakistan shows the live UAE Dirham (AED) to Pakistani Rupee (PKR) rate, updated four times daily and cross-checked against the State Bank of Pakistan's official rate for accuracy. The rate shown on this page reflects the open market rate — for actual remittance transfers, your provider may apply a small spread.

Why do market rate and SBP rate sometimes differ?

The market rate reflects real-time trading activity in Pakistan's open currency market, while the SBP rate is the State Bank of Pakistan's official reference rate set for interbank settlements. Small differences between them are normal and expected; a large or sustained gap may indicate market volatility, liquidity constraints, or regulatory intervention.

How often are currency rates updated?

Rates are refreshed four times a day (10AM, 1PM, 4PM, 7PM PKT), in line with BaKhabar Pakistan's gold and currency data pipeline. Each update pulls fresh data from international exchange rate APIs and cross-checks against the SBP reference rate.

What is the AED/PKR pegged rate?

The UAE Dirham has been pegged to the US Dollar at a fixed rate of 3.6725 since 1997. This means the AED/PKR rate is fundamentally driven by the USD/PKR rate. Similarly, the Saudi Riyal is pegged at 3.75 per USD since 1986. This is why our SBP-derived rates for AED and SAR are particularly accurate — they're calculated from these known, stable pegs rather than volatile market cross-rates.

Can I use these rates for sending money to Pakistan?

These rates are useful as a reference point. Remittance services (such as Wise, Western Union, or banks) typically offer a rate slightly different from the open market rate because they include a fee or spread. Always check your provider's final rate before sending — knowing the market and SBP rates helps you judge whether their offered rate is fair.

What does the "✓ Verified" badge mean?

When the open market rate is within 1% of the State Bank of Pakistan's reference rate, we display the "✓ Verified" badge for that currency pair. This confirms our exchange rate data aligns with the official reference — the same verification methodology used across our gold and silver rate pages.
