How much does a solar system cost in Pakistan?

A typical on-grid residential system costs roughly Rs. 100,000–130,000 per kW installed, covering panels, inverter, mounting/wiring, installation labor, and net metering setup. A 5kW system commonly runs Rs. 550,000–650,000 depending on component quality and your city.

How long does it take for solar to pay for itself?

Payback typically ranges from 3 to 6 years depending on your consumption level, sanctioned load, and how much of your usage happens during daylight hours. Higher consumers with higher sanctioned loads generally see faster payback since they offset more expensive, higher-slab units.

What is net billing (formerly net metering)?

Since February 2026, NEPRA replaced the old 1:1 net metering system with "net billing." Under the new rules, exported solar units are credited at the National Average Energy Purchase Price (NAEPP) — currently Rs. 11/kWh for 2026 — while you still pay the full retail tariff (Rs. 39–55/kWh depending on slab) for any units you import. This makes maximizing daytime self-consumption far more important than exporting surplus to the grid. Existing agreements signed before Feb 9, 2026 continue on their original terms until expiry.

Do I need a battery?

On-grid systems don't need a battery — excess power is exported to the grid via net metering instead. A battery is only worthwhile if you face frequent load-shedding or want backup power during outages, which adds significant cost (hybrid or off-grid systems).

How much can solar reduce my electricity bill?

This depends on system size relative to your consumption and how much power you use directly versus export. A well-sized system covering close to 100% of usage can cut grid costs substantially, though fixed charges and nighttime consumption mean bills are rarely eliminated entirely.
