ISLAMABAD: A fire broke out on the third floor of the MCH Ward at Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) Hospital, resulting in the deaths of 14 newborns, PIMS authorities confirmed.

According to the district administration, rescue teams immediately reached the hospital after receiving information about the fire. Six fire brigade vehicles and four ambulances participated in the rescue operation.

The fire was brought under control promptly, while the children were shifted to the ICU as part of the emergency response. The PIMS chief confirmed that 14 newborns had died in the incident.

The PIMS chief further stated that one newborn and other staff members present on duty were rescued.

An inquiry committee headed by the Additional Deputy Commissioner General has been constituted to investigate the incident. The committee will determine the cause of the fire and examine all aspects of the incident.

The PIMS chief said that a thorough investigation would be conducted to determine the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
