ISLAMABAD: Talks between the government and Jamaat-e-Islami over the abolition of the petroleum levy ended without any breakthrough, as the government did not agree to completely eliminate the levy on petroleum products.
The negotiations were held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Islamabad under the chairmanship of Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar. A Jamaat-e-Islami delegation, led by Liaquat Baloch, participated in the meeting. Other members included Syed Farasat Shah and Engineer Nasrullah Randhawa.
The government team comprised Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal and Rana Sanaullah.
According to sources, the government maintained that maximum possible relief had already been provided to the public on petroleum products, while efforts to offer further relief were ongoing. The government also stated that petroleum prices were linked to fluctuations in international oil markets.
Following the unsuccessful negotiations, the Jamaat-e-Islami delegation left without speaking to the media.
Later, the party's negotiating team held a consultative meeting at its office to review the discussions with the government. The delegation will brief the party's central chief on the outcome of the negotiations, after which Jamaat-e-Islami will decide its future course of action.
